AN ANCIENT FEUD. A MODERN LOVE TRIANGLE. A TWISTED PLOT FOR REVENGE.

The serenity of the San Juan Islands is disrupted when a developer threatens to build a theme park atop a sacred native burial, turning archaeologists Jake and Angeline into the targets of a 10,000-year-old feud between a Haida shaman and his chief.

When half-Haida archaeologist Jake Lalonde arrives on Cedar Island in search of the origins of the Raven myths, he is embroiled in a battle with a ruthless developer who plots to turn his archaeological sites into a theme park. Grad student Angeline Lisbon faces a tough choice Jake and the protection of a sacred site or Radisson and his promise of wealth and power. The developer is relentless, bound to take what he wants. And what he wants is much more sinister—and much more ancient—than either archaeologist can imagine.

The Raven Pool Raven Chronicles Book 1 edition by Deborah Cannon Literature Fiction eBooks

As with every epic conflict, the power struggle between the Eagle and the Raven affects current affairs as much as those of history and legend. What better way to explore Northwestern native culture than through the lives of contemporary archaeologists in the field? Although the narrative seems a bit jerky, these pages offer characters well enough developed against a backdrop of family mystery and cultural legend to entertain and satisfy.

The Raven Pool Raven Chronicles Book 1 edition by Deborah Cannon Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

As an Anthropology major I was really looking forward to reading this book. The subject matter is so interesting. Sadly though the writing was not very riveting. The story seemed to plod along with an anticlimactic ending. It just all seemed to just wind down to an expected ending. I will not read the sequel-not enough suspense or plot interest.
Interesting mystery of the original inhabitants of the Northwest and the theories of how they got there. Also brings the myths and legends of those people to life in the current times. Deals with the importance of protecting pristine areas from ruthless developers. Quick read.
I liked that it was set in the Pacific Northwest and was based on Anthropology and Archaeology of First Nations people. But I found it hard to visualize the scenes in my mind with the authors descriptions. The length of the book was good and the pace was good and I liked most of the character development. I just had a hard time trying to picture what the scenes were supposed to look like. I bought the sequel but don't know if I'll read it or not yet.
The storyline was good but I found myself picturing the author typing out the story. My idea of a good book is when I'm sucked into the story and not thinking about thr writing of it. Some of the interaction of the characters seemed a bit forced and, in the very beginning, it was confusing as to what was happening - at least for me. I think the author has potential but needs to work on writing skills.
I agree that this writer does have potential. I read her short stories, and they are exciting to read, and very well-written. It seems like she just needs more time to work on her skill to write longer stories.

As mentioned by other reviewers, the author has a good grasp of Archaeology and Anthropology, and the those elements are well-woven into the story. That being said, I also find that the characters have no depth.

For instance The little rich girl. WHY can't she make up her mind about whether to be a poor illustrator/artist or to remain pampered by daddy's money. The basic feeling I get from this character is that her life has been so pampered and protected, that she has no dreams or aspirations that are strong enough to drive her to make a firm decision. That's just not very realistic. After the first few months as an artist/illustrator, along with a couple of threats from her father that she would be on her own financially, she should have been able to decide what kind of life she wanted. If the things that drive her are supernatural, then there should be a tad more detail about that sort of thing going on in her mind.

Now, perhaps all these questions are answered later in the story, but there is nothing to hold my interest in the story to continue reading it until the end in order to find out.

Something I want to add to this review

If Deborah Cannon is attempting to write a series of stories that can be adapted easily to the movie screen, then she is doing it exactly right. The less detailed a story is, the easier it is for a screen writer to adapt it.
I have to judge that which seemed a good effort, but this story just seemed shallow. It just didn't take me where I wanted to go. I did like the Archeology angle and the geographical area depicted. Since review improved on the next book of the series., I may try reading one more from this author.
Interesting story line native folk lore. However, the overly cryptic non-hints to character and plot developments are frustrating. There are questions posed with no answer, then suddenly a chapter or two later in a totally unrelated sequence the answer appears in conversation as if it had been known all along. Would not be as jarring if not for the coupling of the "unpredictable twist" the answer gives. The clues point one way but, of course the answer is a different character, motive or action than the murky clues the writer teased with in earlier part of the story. Not sure if I want to continue the series.
